2009 DRAGON*CON / CIRCUS POSTERUS (Booth BT1 & BT2)

Well, it's been a bit of time since San Diego and for all of those who turned out - Thanks! Kathie and I work very hard to ensure fun and toys at as many events as possible and this year's 2009Dragon*Con is nothing short of that. In fact we have brought out the red carpet - it is the first year that Kathie and I will be publicly debuting our limited editions company that many of you are aware of... Circus Posterus. Not one, but two booths will house CP at Dragon*Con (Hyatt Regency / Grand Hall East / Booths BT1 & BT2) in the Comics and Pop Art Alley section of the event.

... and we have flown in many Circus Posterus' artists from all over the country that will be offering products that have never been available till now as well as signing and sketching sessions for all of them (***see schedule further below) - many from what I understand will also be providing possible sketch commissions (come to the booth for more info - a few slots during the event - each artist has their own pricing guidelines.)

During the whole course of the event and at each artists sketch and signing session we will offer their exclusive Dragon*Con editions or debut projects... (*see Below)

SUPER 7 (booth #4729) MONSTER FAMILY: Big Sal toy release (Super 7 x Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas) // This event will mark the original colorway release for Big Sal - The collaborative B-Movie monster toy that Kathie Olivas and I designed for Super 7's MONSTER FAMILY series - Complete in classic Japanese Kaiju toy presentation... clear vinyl with opaque paints - It came out amazing!!! Big Sal will be released along with our signing on Thursday, July 23rd at 3PM. They will be $25 each and available until all sold out.

MINDSTYLE (booth #4545) SERV-O-MATICS // 2 FACED HAZEL MONO EDITION and MINDstyle's 2nd Anniversary Box Set release... MINDstyle should have plenty of my blind box mini figure Serv-O-Matics line for ComiCon just days after official release to retailers... The reviews have been amazing for this series (with chase figure by Kathie Olivas) - be sure to pick them up before they are gone!

MINDstyle will also be release their limited edition 2nd Anniversary Box Set which will be released exclusively at the convention and direct to ATS members. The Box Set is limited to 200 sets worldwide -$130 US. The special premium designed MINDstyle Box Set includes glossy Black & White versions of 5 highly sough after figures and a numbered collectors card. So at Art Basel this past week, a great friend of mine - gave me sh&*t over not updating this blog and he's right. Honestly I thought that I wasn't getting any traffic, but I now realize that I was wrong... it will be real fast and probably a little weird - because I am actually out the door to Santa Cruz for a two person show at Cardboard Spaceship (opens Friday) and a family visit to Albuquerque - Kathie and I have been really traveling a lot this year... anyway...

Last Wednesday Kathie and I went to ART BASEL in Miami... We were both showing at Francesco LoCastro & Gen Art's VANGAURD Arts Fair (The first art fair and first year in this form to specifically represent what is happening in the "Low Brow" and or Pop Surrealism genre of contemporary art during Basel.)... At the fair, we had work at Mark Murphy's Know Show Exhibition as well as Yves Laroche Galerie's (Montreal) space... the most we have had at this event yet.

We usually stay in a hotel, but this year we thought we could condo it... and we did - Funny enough we rented a condo with Sas and Colin Christian, Mark Murphy and Chris Ryniak... It was a lot of fun - a lot of laughs...

The “Black Market at Black Maria” exhibition will carry a bazaar theme, complete with some of the accoutrements of the shopping experience: paintings suspended on clothing hangers, displayed in shoe boxes and on display stands holding a variety of artworks.
The idea is to both poke gentle fun at the cosmopolitan shopping experience and, on a serious note, remind ourselves of the spiritual rewards of appreciating and owning great art. In keeping with the shopping mall theme, patrons will also be able to take with them whatever they purchase, just as they would in a store.

A painting can be as satisfying as wearing a sexy dress or owning a feature-laden barbecue, except there is an actual, sometimes life-changing meaning waiting to be derived from a work of art. Hence the subtitle of the exhibition: Skip the Mall.

“Black Market” is quintessential Black Maria, showing the work of emerging artists and established artists side by side. It is a great opportunity to see work by artists with international collectors as well as by artists who will be showing their work outside of an academic environment for the first time.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters will at the gallery’s store, Under the Table, from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm for a signing. The opening is also the official release of Kathie Olivas’ Vintage Colorway of her Benny and Red Bird vinyl figures. Both Kathie and Brandt will be signing their vinyl figures as well as prints made exclusively for Black Maria Gallery. A raffle of one of Kathie Olivas’ custom vinyl figures will be one of the highlights of the evening.

FRANCESCO LOCASTRO'S: NO ONE BELONGS HERE MORE THAN YOU EXHIBITION

I just finished this brand new piece for Gen Art Miami's VANGUARD event, its highly anticipated art exhibition and party during Art Basel. This unprecedented show will feature works from 30 of the most widely recognized, cutting-edge Urban Contemporary and Pop Surrealism artists from around the world.

The exhibition, curated by Francesco LoCastro, is entitled No One Belongs Here More Than You. Housed at Palm Court, 23rd Street just off of Collins in Miami Beach, it will include paintings, sculptures and artist installations and will be complemented by the newest
series of works from Miami artist Lebo, entitled Infinite Echoes and Supersonic Soul Stories.

MINDstyle: Brandt Peters' Signature Series Slap Happy and Mr. Muggles

Slap Happy and Mr. Muggles sound like it should be some kind of Polka band, but no, it’s a new release from Brandt Peters through the great new vinyl company, MINDStyle.

Starting with a beautifully painted, high-quality box that is becoming a trademark of MINDstyle, you are treated to the immediate feel of an old-time carnival. You know, they kind with the carnies that do awful things to you in the haunted house. Open it up and glimpse the monochromatic figures, and the feeling is only heightened.

The figures have a very strong design to them. They have lines that can be almost Disney-like. They have a cartoonish feel that looks like it came right out of Steam Boat Willie, but another quality that makes it looks like it comes out of an acid-induced nightmare.

I’m talking about the fact that the cute little dog and carnival barker have skulls for faces. Sure, they are smiling, and they are both wearing hats. You can’t be evil with a hat, right? But black holes where the eyes should be definitely make you wonder.

The eyes are just an example of how well Brandt uses color, even in the black-and-white format. The rest of the figure's shades are friendly and look like old-style animation. It’s the eyes that pierce through it all, but in the end, they still have a cute overtone. Check them out and see for yourself.

It's been a while since I've posted, so I figured that I would start out with a bang. Last week VINYLPULSE.COM released prototype images of a new vinyl toy figure from MINDstyle based on my Slap-Happy! character from my current series of retro-styled paintings. I am so excited!!! A first year for me to be included in Pictoplasma! They ended up using my Ink-Slinger (upcoming toy from Wheaty Wheat Studios) design + the nolstalgia based robot mascot design I did for the toy boutique "3D Retro"... The book is out and a must get!!!

Just received my copy of "RAT FINKS REVENGE, The Custom Monster Collection" book from Tornado Design. This amazing project brought together the work of 83 contemporary artists - including Glenn Barr, Dave Burke, Daisuke Maeda (Fudemae), Dave Higgins, Mark Mothersbaugh, Michael Roberts, Chris Ryniak , Rockin' Jelly Bean (including myself - just to name a few)...each providing a reinterpretation customization of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's most famous character, Rat Fink. The Petersen Museum in LA, just exhibited the work along with a retrospective of Roth's work - check it out if ya get the chance - the show is up till June 3rd 2007.

Just received my advance copies of the book Dot Dot Dash (Designer Toys, Action Figures and Character Art) from German publisher Die Gestalten Verlag. I was invited from the editors to contribute any and all character art related to the vinyl toy industry. Dot Dot Dash's quality, design and fresh concept, blew me away + the book is massive (259 pgs, Hardcover). I was able to contribute my Wheaty Wheat Studio's vinyl toy releases...(Release date: TBD 2007) - of my characters: Ink-Slinger #5, and The Boiler + a custom I did for Kidrobot's 1st Munny Show. This book is the start of many, many releases to the public based on my work - 2007 is going to be great! I know I have been a little slow to post new paintings - only because most of the work including a huge amount of collaborations between Kathie and I are for our book coming up with Murphy Design. Trust me it's worth waiting for this one...

Anyway because I can't help myself - a new piece (this is but one in a huge series). I wont keep these up long, and they will be switched out over time...

Original art work and custom vinyl toys - Span of Sunset produced Cheshire Cat from Disney's: Alice in Wonderland. Artists include Joe Ledbetter, Amanda Visell, UPSO, Anthony Ausgang, Kathie Olivas and many many more! All custom Cheshire Cat figures will be auctioned off and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Heifer Foundation, a charity focused on ending world hunger.

Kure Kure Takora

There are no words to describe my fascination with the 1970s tokusatsu Japanese Children's Comedy show Kure Kure Takora (Translation: Gimme Gimme Octopus) - The show produced by Toho Company Ltd. aired on Fuji TV and it's subsidaries for roughly a year with a total of 260 Episodes... The picture above is the central character TAKORA who coveted for everything saying "KURE! (I want it)" all the time. Each episode was absurd, strange, surreal, indescribable, and ran 3 minutes each. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme!!!!!!

You may have noticed that a character (actually group of characters) seem to be popping up in my new body of work (over the year)...I coin them "SKELVES"...They seem to be a by-product of my fascination with the occult (both Western and Eastern). I have big plans with them, some very cool projects - stay tuned!!!

My good friends over at Muttpop have posted some character sketches I did on the plane on the way out to Los Angels for Kathie's show at Copro Nason. One of the characters (Tequila), comes from their LUCHE LIBRE comic and toy line. If you aren't aware of these guys or their Luche Libre comic about to explode onto the market - you should be. Also go and check out Gobi's work - hands down, one of my favorite LUCHE LIBRE artists...

ART BOOK

Over the past couple of months I have been preparing a large volume of work (paintings and sketches) for a book - it will cover both my wife's work - Kathie Olivas (www.miserychildren.com) and myself.

We are working in collaboration with Murphy Design (Book Design and Publishing) - Murphy specializes in developing unique, one-of-a-kind, limited edition books that capture today's leading artists, illustrators and lifestyle movements. They have been behind many successful projects/ books (you may have seen them) - Jeff Soto, "Potato Stamp Dreams"...Joe Sorren, "When She was Camera", "In Celebration of Balance..."...and recently Jonathan Weiner's " Tranquil Aftermath".

We are leaning towards an early 2007 release. Stay tuned for more info and samples and info on special ultra-limited editions.

It's official - 3 of my character designs were accepted into the 'new' long-awaited 2006 PICTOPLASMA catalogue... 3rd volume in the encyclopaedia series - I really can't express how amazing this opportunity is, what an honor!!! One of the designs that was accepted "above" was done for 3D Retro an online toy store based on the West Coast. ("Retro" Robot design 2006 copyright. All rights reserved by 3D Retro)

For those that are unfamiliar with Pictoplasma or their encyclopaedia series: (from their site) The Pictoplasma Archives began in 1999 as an extensive inventory, collection and showcase of contemporary character design. With the countless images collected, pictoplasma examines the vast array of possibilities characters offer as signs of an independent graphical language. Pictoplasma is a curated public archive of the most daring and outstanding characters in a growing global network. As far as their publications - the first two pictoplasma publications became overnight bestsellers, now referred to as the “old and new testament of character visuals”. First printed in 2001 and 2003, the pictorial encyclopaedias focus on general tendencies and complex interrelations within contemporary character design.

The book should be available in most major book stores before the end of the year - will update with actual date soon!!!

Letter Pressed just released two new AS (Artist Series) cards - one for Brendan Monroe, titled: Blob Riders and one based on my Ink-Slinger #5 character "self titled"... see above

Ink: (Foil) silver
Card Paper Stock: Slight yellowed (vintage)
Envelope: Cool Gray w/ white chips

The Process: is based in applying (pressing) a foil into paper leaving a slight embossed look and feel - This "pressing" leaves the characteristic texture of letterpress, an indentation filled with ink just below the surface of the paper. The impression can be made from wooden, linoleum, or metal plates, and can be hand-pressed, or pulled through mechanically. This is how the first books were printed, and Letter Pressed is proud to be using the same techniques for their cards.
